Excursion to Evonik and Sasol in Marl

To conclude the design project in the winter semester 2023/24, our group took part in an inspiring excursion to our industrial partner Evonik in Marl to gain insights into the world of the chemical industry. The main aim of the excursion was to discuss the results of their design project entitled "Conception of a plant for the production of ethylene oxide from renewable raw materials" with the experts on site and to gain an in-depth insight into the processes at Evonik and Sasol.

The excursion began with the presentation of the results of the design project at Evonik. The students had the opportunity to present their innovative ideas and solutions to a team of scientists and engineers and receive valuable feedback. These discussions not only offered insights into the real challenges of the industry, but also promoted the exchange between students and experts.

The highlight of the excursion was an exciting and comprehensive tour of an industrial plant for ethylene oxide production at Sasol, where the students were given a detailed insight into the plant and process structure. Afterwards, Sasol's experienced operating staff were happy to answer the numerous questions from our students.

At the end of the excursion, TU Dortmund University alumnus Dr. Tobias Becker showed the technical center of process engineering at Evonik and thus provided an interesting insight into the work processes of a chemical company.

Overall, the excursion to Evonik and Sasol in Marl was an extremely instructive and stimulating experience. Through the combination of discussions, plant tours and practical insights, we were able to expand our knowledge and gain valuable insights into the diverse aspects of the chemical industry.

On behalf of our students, we would like to thank our industrial partner Evonik for the great cooperation during the design project and for the entertaining excursion and Sasol for the exciting guided tour!
